It is important to evaluate the inventories and the release and transport behavior of the spallation products (SPs) in the Lead-Bismuth Eutectic (LBE) coolant system of Accelerator Driven System (ADS) for the safety studies of the radiological hazard both in the cases of normal operation and accident. University of Fukui and JAEA have been developing the computer analysis code TRAIL (Transport of RAdionuclides In Liquid metal systems) which predicts the time dependent behavior of SPs within the LBE coolant system of ADS for the wide range of operational events. The source term of both radioactive and stable SPs in the LBE coolant is given as input and the radioactive decay chain model for the radioactive SPs is implemented in the code to evaluate the effect of precursors on the SPs mobility. This paper presents the recent advancement status of the code development and the validation results comparing with the distribution data of volatile SPs in MEGAPIE spallation target.

Recent status of the pulsed spallation neutron source at J-PARC

Takada, Hiroshi; Haga, Katsuhiro

JPS Conference Proceedings (Internet), 28, p.081003_1 - 081003_7, 2020/02

At the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC), the pulsed spallation neutron source has been in operation with a redesigned mercury target vessel from October 2017 to July 2018, during which the operational beam power was restored to 500 kW and the operation with a 1-MW equivalent beam was demonstrated for one hour. The target vessel includes a gas-micro-bubbles injector and a 2-mm-wide narrow mercury flow channel at the front end as measures to suppress the cavitation damage. After the operating period, it was observed that the cavitation damage at the 3-mm-thick front end of the target vessel could be suppressed less than 17.5 $$mu$$m.

Lead-Bismuth Eutectic (LBE) is used as a spallation neutron target and coolant materials of Accelerator Driven System (ADS), and many kinds of elements are produced as spallation products. It is important to evaluate the release and transport behavior of the spallation products in the LBE. The inventories and the physicochemical composition of the spallation products produced in LBE have been investigated for an LBE loop in the ADS Target Test Facility (TEF-T) in J-PARC. The inventories of the spallation products in the LBE were estimated using the PHITS code. The physicochemical composition of the spallation products in the LBE was calculated using the Thermo-Calc code under the conditions of the operation temperatures of LBE from 350$$^{circ}$$C to 500$$^{circ}$$C and the oxygen concentrations in LBE from 10 ppb to 1 ppm. The calculation showed that the 5 elements of Rb, Tl, Tc, Os, Ir, Pt, Au and Hg were soluble in LBE under the all given conditions and any kinds of compound were not formed in LBE. It was suggested that the oxides of Ce, Sr, Zr and Y were stable as CeO$$_{2}$$, SrO, ZrO$$_{2}$$ and Y$$_{2}$$O$$_{3}$$ in the LBE.

Proceedings of 4th International Workshop on the Utilisation and Reliability of High Power Proton Accelerators, p.507 - 517, 2005/11

Under the framework of J-PARC, the Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute (JAERI) plans to construct the Transmutation Experimental Facility (TEF). The TEF consists of two facilities: the Transmutation Physics Experimental Facility (TEF-P) and the ADS Target Test Facility (TEF-T). The TEF-P is a critical facility which can accept a 600 MeV - 10 W proton beam. The TEF-T is a material irradiation facility using a 600 MeV - 200 kW proton beam, where a Pb-Bi target is installed, but neutron multiplication by nuclear fuel will not be attempted. This report describes the purposes of the facility, the present status of the conceptual design, and the expected experiments to be performed.

Proceedings of International Conference on Nuclear Energy System for Future Generation and Global Sustainability (GLOBAL 2005) (CD-ROM), 6 Pages, 2005/10

The Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute (JAERI) has been proceeding with the research and development (R&D) on accelerator-driven subcritical system (ADS). The ADS proposed by JAERI is a lead-bismuth (Pb-Bi) eutectic cooled fast subcritical core with 800 MWth. To realize such an ADS, some technical issues should be studied, developed and demonstrated. JAERI has started a comprehensive R&D program since the fiscal year of 2002 to acquire knowledge and elemental technology that are necessary for the validation of engineering feasibility of the ADS. The first stage of the program had been continued for three years. The program is conducted by JAERI, and many institutes, universities and private companies were involved. Items of R&D are concentrated on three technical areas peculiar to the ADS: (1) superconducting linear accelerator (SC-LINAC), (2) Pb-Bi eutectic as spallation target and core coolant, and (3) subcritical core design and technology. In the present work, the outline and the results in the first stage of the program are reported.

Present status and perspective on nuclear transmutation, C; Accelerator driven transmutation system

Oigawa, Hiroyuki

Genshikaku Kenkyu, 47(6), p.39 - 52, 2003/03

Minor actinide (MA) and long-lived fission product (LLFP) keep their radiological toxicity in high level waste of nuclear fuel cycle for long period. In order to transmute such nuclides to short-lived or stable ones, the Accelerator-Driven Transmutation System (ADS) is proposed and developed. This article presents the current status of the research and development on ADS, technical issues to be solved, the experimental program under the framework of the High-Intensity Proton Accelerator Project (J-PARC), and worldwide activities.

Proceedings of American Nuclear Society Conference "Nuclear Applications in the New Millennium" (AccApp-ADTTA '01) (CD-ROM), 7 Pages, 2002/00

A design study of the accelerator-driven system (ADS) for transmutation of minor actinides and long-lived fission products has been performed at Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute (JAERI) under the national OMEGA program. To solve the technical issues related to the ADS development, a transmutation experimental facility (TEF) is planned to bulid under the JAERI-High Energy Accelerator Research Organization joint project. The TEF consists of two facilities, Transmutation Physics Experimental Facility and Transmutation Engineering Experimental Facility. Proton beams of 600 MeV and 0.3 mA are to be delivered to this facility. The presentation describes a conceptual design study of the TEF.

no journal, ,

To validate the TRAIL code, the radioactivity of noble gas (Ar, Kr, Xe), mercury (Hg) and gold (Au) measured in the cover gas of the MEGAPIE target at the start-up of the operation has been evaluated using the code. The release behavior of these spallation products from LBE was discussed based on the results from the viewpoint of the solubility in LBE and the vapor pressure.
